Ivan Mercado was born in the Dominican Republic and grew up in the United States. Since entering the legal profession in 1996, he has been in private practice. He is known as a tireless advocate who has excelled in the profession as a litigator and counselor to clients of all types. He has tried more than a hundred criminal and civil trials to verdict.

Professional Achievements

Mr. Mercado began his legal career in 1996, as a law clerk to the Justices of the Superior Court of Massachusetts. After completing a one-year clerkship with the Superior Court, Mr. Mercado began working in the law firm McBride & Associates, in Boston, Massachusetts, a law office specializing in criminal cases. In 1998, Mr. Mercado became a partner in Keefe & Mercado, working on criminal and personal injury cases. In 2000, Mr. Mercado partnered with Ms. Rengel to work on criminal, immigration, civil litigation and “high end” personal injury cases.

Professional Associations

Attorney Mercado is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers; the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorneys.

Mr. Mercado also volunteers and contributes his professional expertise on a pro bono basis to several non-profit groups.

Ivan Mercado has experience practicing in numerous jurisdictions of the United States including Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, Maine, Puerto Rico, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania. He has also handled and litigated cases in Spain. He has been lead counsel in cases in state courts, federal courts, appeals courts, and state supreme courts. He has also testified in foreign courts as an expert.


Mr. Mercado is a graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. He went to law school at Northeastern University School of Law, in Boston, MA. He has an LL. M. in Human Rights, which he received in 2005, graduating summa cum laude and Valedictorian of his class at Saint Thomas University School of Law in Miami, FL. He also holds a Master’s in Spanish law from the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares in Spain.


Mr. Mercado is a frequent lecturer before professional and educational groups. He has been invited to teach as a guest lecturer at Suffolk University (Madrid Campus) on Intellectual Property and US and EU comparative law. He has also been invited to lecture by Bar Associations in Spain on US legal matters. Mr. Mercado has also appeared on radio and television as a guest commentator.
